The highest average annual rainfall received in the valley was
8,361.9 mm in 2001 while the figure for 2012 stands at 8,477.4 mm. The average
annual rainfall of the Western Ghats ranges from 6,000 mm at the crest of the
ghats to as low as 600 mm in the valley portion, says Regional Analysis of
Rainfall Extremes of Western Ghats as per the research study done by the National
Institute of Hydrology, Karnataka. Thus, the Silent Valley gets the highest
average annual rainfall in the Western Ghats.

The Walakkad and the Poochippara areas of the Silent Valley
National Park had been recording the highest rainfall in the valley since 2000.
The Sairandhri area of the valley was proposed for a dam in the 1970s for the Silent
Valley hydroelectric project. The project was later aborted due to the protests
from environmentalists. The Neelikkal area of the valley is another place where
an annual rainfall of 5000 mm and 6000 mm are received per year.
Mist in Silent Valley National Park |
Silent Valley is getting continuous rain for six to seven months in
a year. In the remaining months, mist will shroud the valley and is estimated
to be yielding the 15 per cent of water generated in the rainforest, along with
the blessing of north-east and the south-west monsoons in the valley.
