Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary and forest
lies within Thrissur district and Thalappilly taluk in Kerala. The sanctuary
comes under the administrative jurisdiction of Peechi Wild life Division in Northern
Wild life Circle at Palakkad.

The Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife
sanctuary is the second oldest sanctuary in Kerala having the code KER/141.The
sanctuary comprises of parts of following mountains.
- Paravattanimala
- Machadmala
- Bahranipacha mala
The total area of the sanctuary is
125 Sq.km. Till the dawn of 19 th century the forest of this sanctuary were
under the possession of feudal chief called the Naduvachira who owned
allegiance to the Raja of cochin.

The Sanctuary was formed by
combining portion of Peechi, Pattikkad and Machad Range of Trichur Forest
Division vide GO (MS) No.871 dated 06-08-1958.The area of Peechi Range is again
bifurcated in to Peechi and Vazhani Watersheds.

Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary consists of 125 sq
km and is contiguous with the forest areas of Nelliampathy and Palappilly
reserves. On south, the sanctuary has a common boundary with Chimmony Wildlife
Sanctuary. The terrain of the Sanctuary is undulating and the elevation varies
from 45 m to 900 m. The dominant vegetation is moist deciduous and
semi-evergreen species confined to the higher reaches. A total of 1000 species
of angiosperms were recorded from the area out of which 50 species are orchids.
A wide variety of medicinal plants are also reported.
